# Character Studio deprecation

> The legacy Inworld Character Studio has been retired. This guide explains what changed and how to rebuild your characters with the Inworld Agent Runtime.

## What changed

The legacy **Character Studio** (characters, scenes, knowledge, triggers, variables, interactions, integrations, voice studio, custom pronunciations, player profiles) is no longer available. The workflows that used to live in Studio have moved to the **Inworld Portal** and the **Inworld Agent Runtime**.

If you used Studio to author and host characters end-to-end, you can now compose the same capabilities in your engine or backend with Runtime SDKs and templates. These include knowledge retrieval, safety, long-term memory, expressive voice, emotion, and relationship modeling.

## From Studio to Runtime

Since its inception, Inworld has built real-time AI interaction around characters that form relationships, express emotions, remember conversations, and respond naturally through voice.

**Runtime** makes that character-building expertise available as an AI orchestration toolkit. You get all of Studio's capabilities, including knowledge retrieval, safety checks, long-term memory, and expressive voice synthesis, with full visibility and control over how your characters are built and run.

## Build your character with Runtime

Choose the platform that matches your stack. Follow its Character template to recreate and extend your Studio workflow.

### Unity

The Unity AI Runtime SDK provides the components you need to build AI characters directly in your Unity project.

- **[Build your own character](https://docs.inworld.ai/Unity/runtime/build-your-own.md)** — Step-by-step guide to authoring a character by editing graph data, swapping personas, and wiring up the character interaction scene.
- **[Character Interaction Demo by Primitives](https://docs.inworld.ai/Unity/runtime/demos/primitives/character.md)** — A runnable demo that combines LLM, TTS, and STT primitives into a complete character interaction. Use it as a reference for composing your own.

### Unreal Engine

The Unreal Agent Runtime SDK brings Inworld's character authoring directly into your editor.

- **[Character template](https://docs.inworld.ai/unreal-engine/runtime/templates/character.md)** — A comprehensive system for AI character interaction, including character and player components, profiles, dialogue and emotion graphs, voice, and lip-sync.

### Node.js

If you're building a backend or web experience, start from the Node.js Voice Agent template.

- **[Voice Agent template](https://docs.inworld.ai/node/templates/voice-agent.md)** — A full conversational character implementation that you can customize end-to-end.
