Core Description

A character's Core Description provides details about their current circumstances, backstory, general disposition, and how they present themselves to others.

Core

What to Include

If there are any key relationships, businesses, jobs, events, or locations related to your character, they should be included here.

In addition, if the character employs a particular manner of speaking or exhibits distinct behaviors, these should also be mentioned in some form.

This is one of the main fields that the AI pulls from when determining how to portray a character, so make sure to include all essential information that you want to be incorporated into their interactions.

What NOT to Include

The Core Description describes who the character is and what they want, not what they know.

Do not put any knowledge, facts, secrets, or other things the character knows in their Core Description, this information belongs in their Knowledge.

In addition, any fears, doubts, or insecurities the character may have belong in their Flaws, and any goals, motives, and aspirations they may have belong in their Motivations.

Writing a Core Description

It is recommended you use evocative and descriptive language when writing a character's Core Description, instead of straightforwardly listing information.

This helps the AI develop a fluid narrative around the character and their circumstances, encouraging the AI to visualize the character, interpret any descriptive elements, and craft its own dynamic portrayal.

A dramatic, evocative writing approach results in more fully-realized and expressive responses from the AI when portraying the character.

When writing, think of how a novel or magazine article would describe your character. How would they paint a picture with words to capture the reader's attention? The more evocative your description, the better the AI will be able to understand and interpret your intentions.

What to Include

When writing a character's Core Description, this field generally includes information about the character's:

  • Backstory
  • Relationships with other characters
  • Specialty or unique skillset
  • Personal opinions
  • Current appearance
  • Things they have experienced
  • Favorite sayings
  • Things they hate
  • Things they love

Using Prose

If your Core Description is just a list of information, it may limit the AI's ability to develop a fluid narrative around the character and their circumstances.

Writing in prose helps the AI to develop a fluid narrative around the character and their circumstances.

Prose encourages the AI to visualize the character, interpret the descriptive elements, and then craft its own dynamic portrayal, resulting in a more fully realized and evocative outcome.

It can be useful to imagine how a novel or magazine article would describe your character. How would they paint a picture to capture your attention?

Accuracy and Consistency

If your character’s Core Description contains spelling, grammatical, or formatting errors, there is a risk of the character learning from those errors. Similarly, contradictory information can confuse the AI and introduce unusual or uncharacteristic responses.

Therefore, every effort should be made to maintain syntactic accuracy and internal consistency within this description.

In short, to ensure high-quality output, assure you provide high-quality input.

Write Using the Character's Voice

Characters often draw directly from the entries in their Core Description when generating talking points during a conversation.

Due to how the AI uses these entries, it is often valuable to write a portion of them using the voice of the character, as if they were talking about themselves in third-person.

While it may take a bit of getting used to, this writing style assures that when the AI draws from the entries, they will already naturally be using that character's distinct tone of voice.

For example, think of how the character would describe things such as their closest relationships, cherished items, valued activities, or most hated foes; is it their “mother,” or perhaps "mummy" or "mum" instead? Do they love "fighting," or do they instead love a "good dustup" or "glorious battle"?

The more invocative, personal voice phrasing often gives better AI-generated conversation responses.

Character and Player Syntax

It is recommended you use {character} and {player} in place of actual names.

This helps ensure there are no disconnects if either the character’s or player's name is changed in the future.

Character Limit

A character's Core Description can contain a maximum of 2000 characters.
