A character's Safety settings prevent them from discussing and engaging with specific topics.

When a character encounters a subject they are not permitted to speak about due to their safety settings, they will mention they cannot or will not talk about it.

Safety Settings​

A topic within Inworld's safety settings can be set to either Strict, Mild, or Loose.

  • Strict: Zero-tolerance for mentioning, discussing, or even acknowledging the subject.
  • Mild: The character may acknowledge the subject and will permit PG-13 level discussion involving it.
  • Loose: No restrictions on the topic, with the character being free to mention and discuss it.

These settings apply to both the player and the character.

While lowering a safety setting to Mild or Loose makes it possible for the player to encounter these topics in conversation, it does not guarantee they will do so. Whether or not the character broaches these subjects largely comes down to both the character's design and the player's inputs.

If the character is a noble or an ambassador who use polite, formal language, they will not suddenly begin swearing because their safety settings were lowered. However, if a character has a custom dialogue style such as "swears constantly," they will almost certainly begin swearing when their safety settings are lowered.

Default Safety Configurations​

By default, characters are set with Strict limits on Profanity, Violence, and Adult Topics, a Mild limit on Alcohol and Substance Use, and have no restrictions on Politics and Religion.

The settings for Hate Speech and Self-Harm are always locked, and cannot be turned on.

Custom Safety Configurations​

If you wish to enable a custom set of safety configurations for your character, go to their Safety panel and flip the Custom Safety Configurations toggle to On.

You can then make any changes to the individual safety settings you wish.

Once you have adjusted these settings, press the Save button in the top-right to save these changes to your character.

A message then appears prompting you to confirm your changes.

Enter "CONFIRM" into the field provided and press Save to finalize your safety changes.

Risks of Modifying Safety Settings​

Note that opening up safety settings may make your account vulnerable to being suspended or auto-banned if particularly egregious character responses or traits are detected.

This is most likely if characters discuss topics related to (1) genocide, (2) discrimination, or (3) the promotion of self-harm.
